Electronic textbooks may soon replace traditional books in Texas classrooms.

The Texas House gave preliminary approval Saturday to a measure that would make electronic textbooks part of the approved list of instructional materials schools can choose from.

That means qualified information could be downloaded to laptops or a Kindle electronic reader if schools choose to use the technology.

"Traditional textbooks are a vehicle to deliver content," said Rep. Dan Branch, R-Dallas, who sponsored the measure. "But for many students that vehicle is quickly becoming a horse and buggy."
